How Your Skin Is Under Attack
If you’re up all night and can’t sleep, you’re in for a long, unfavorable roller coaster ride. When you are constantly losing sleep, your immune system is literally holding on by a thread. Above, you noticed that some of the symptoms were moodiness and fatigue. These two symptoms put together become a large source of stress, and stress may lead to skin issues for some people. Due to lack of sleep your organs also go into overdrive, and because your skin is an organ, it too is trying to keep up. All the added stress on your body messes with your insulin balance and hormones. This in turn may cause a weakened immune system and skin rashes, among many other issues.
The bottom line is your overall health affects your skin. Getting adequate sleep is essential for your overall health and for healthy skin. So why are you having a hard time sleeping?
Why Can’t I Sleep?
Are you one of those people who asks yourselves “why can’t I sleep through the night?” I may not have an answer for you because we are all different. If you believe you have developed a medical condition, please go see your health care provider.
Now on to my general advice. Many people like me experience a lack of sleep due to an over active mind. For me for example, just before going to sleep, I may think of a topic (adopting a pet), and then instantly begin looking for the perfect pet. The perfect pet would be hard to find since I would have to look through hundreds or thousands of pages. I would become infatuated and until I found that perfect pet, I would not rest. Another example could be stressing about the future. With fears of a recession, job loss, increasing prices, and everything in between, you may be up at night worrying about how it will affect your life or your child’s life or whomever. All these different thoughts lead to lack of sleep, puts stress on your body and immune system, and then trickle down to everything else. They are all connected. If you find yourself awake due to snoring issues, sleep apnea, or any other sleeping disorder, please contact a medical professional to seek assistance.
In the paragraph above, I gave you examples of what can keep you up at night, but now I will give you a list for the potential why:
- Stress
- Eating disorder
- Paranoia
- Overactive mind/imagination
- Fear
- Nightmare
- PTSD
- Snoring
- Sleep apnea
- Anxiety
- Depression
